The Department of Communities (previously known as DCP) is reforming Out of Home Care services to reflect current evidence-based, trauma informed child protection case practice. The reform aims to reduce the number of children in care, which is very important for Aboriginal children and young people in Western Australia who are more than 20 times more likely to be placed into State care.
For all children and young people—but especially Aboriginal children and young people—the changes to child protection aim to ensure children in care arrangements will have their physical, emotional, cultural and spiritual needs met in keeping with the Aboriginal Child Placement Principle.
The reform process means that several ACCOs, including Kinship Connections, will for the first time be providing culturally safe Out Of Home Care services.
